The call to the priesthood... what does it sound like?

Many people already in the work force find that they are hearing a call to explore the possibility of priesthood. This is not unusual. You might feel that the work you are doing or the life you have lived up to this point are not filling your deepest needs to make a lasting impact on the world. Perhaps you don't feel as close to the Lord as you would like. These pages are for you.

The qualifications for second career candidates are basically the same as those required of any candidate: good morals, good health, and academic ability.

Talking with God is essential in seeking His will for our lives. He can't talk to us if we do not spend time talking to Him. Daily Mass, frequent use of the sacrament of reconciliation, and private time with God are excellent ways to listen to His call. Here is a prayer that you might find helpful.

Prayer
May zeal for Your glory
And for the salvation of the world
Inflame those you have chosen.
May they be saints in Your likeness.
May Your Holy Spirit strengthen them.
May they be priests and religious according to Your own heart!
Amen.

So what do I do now?
Pray: Pray for a generous heart. Pray for courage to overcome self-doubt, fear and negative thoughts.
" Fear is useless, what is needed is Faith."

Listen: Listen for the call from within: the thought that won't go away, the inspiration you have had since childhood, that desire for more fulfillment than any career you have considered, the voice of God in prayer. But don't look for lightning bolts and miracles. Listen for the call from outside: what have others seen in you and said you would be good at? Have others suggested to you a possible vocation to priesthood, diaconate, or religious life?
" Speak, Lord, your servant is listening."

Act: Act on your call. Read about your choices. Ask questions. Join a vocation awareness prayer group. Visit a monastery or convent. Share your ideas with others. Talk with priests and religious to find what the life is really like. The Vocations Office is here to give you assistance with any of the above.
