God's Call
So you have a good job, making good money, nice residence, nice car, free time, and yet something is lacking. Like the man from a suburb of Chicago told a priest, “I have all I ever wanted and I am miserable.”
Many times after one has worked a career for a time, he/she realizes that the happiness they sought is elusive. The job just doesn’t do it anymore. The fire has gone out, restlessness increases, questioning runs deep.
Restlessness has brought many a person to priesthood or religious life. It is the way God calls those who were going for the “big apple” or the “brass ring” and, once in possession of it, felt empty-handed. In those moments of restless searching, God plants the whisper of a vocation, a yearning for more significance, impact, and meaning.
If you find yourself in a career and asking the big questions of life and the idea of priesthood comes back--or even comes for the first time--listen up! But don’t just listen. Act!
